چکیده

There exists a model in a countable language having a unique element which is not definable in Lω1,ω. We answer problem 10.12 from the updated version of Arnie Miller’s problem list, [3]. Definition For a structure M and a ∈ M, we say that a is definable over Lω1,ω if there is a formul ψ ∈ Lω1,ω such that for all b ∈ M a = b ⇔ M |= ψ(b). Theorem 0.1 There is a countable language L and a model M for that language such that there is a unique a ∈ M which is not definable over Lω1,ω. 1 Ranks for formulas For the entirety of this section, L is a countable language. Definition For φ ∈ L we define the rank of the formula by induction. If φ is an atomic formula, then it has rank 0. If φ has rank α, then ∃xφ and ∀xφ both have rank α+ 1 and ¬φ has rank α. If (φn)n∈N is a sequence of formulas, each φn having rank αn, then

1 Unique Undefinable Elements

[Fu68] presents structures, in a finite relational type, with unique undefinable elements and recursive theories. We present somewhat simpler examples, with somewhat stronger properties. We also present structures, in a finite relational type, whose unique undefinable element is weak second order undefinable. We convert all examples of a similar nature to corresponding examples in the form of b...

Unique Undefinable Elements

We present a structure (in a finite relational type) with a unique undefinable element. Furthermore, the unique undefinable element is undefinable even if we use the quantifier "there exist infinitely many" and quantitative variants. We show that the structures can be taken to be a graph. We also prove that "there is a structure (in a finite relational type) with a unique second order undefinab...

Undefinable Classes and Definable Elements in Models of Set Theory and Arithmetic

Every countable model M of PA or ZFC, by a theorem of S. Simpson, has a "class" X which has the curious property: Every element of the expanded structure (M, X) is definable. Here we prove: THEOREM A. Every completion T of PA has a countable model M (indeed there are 2" many such M 's for each T) which is not pointwise definable and yet becomes pointwise definable upon adjoining any undefinable...

Fiction and Politics of Islamophobia: A Case Study of Greg Hrbek’s Not on Fire, but Burning

Islamophobia is defined as a closed-minded hatred, fear or prejudice toward Islam and Muslims that result in discrimination, marginalization, and oppression. This phenomenon was strengthened after September 11 marked a watershed in the history of America. In the wake of 9/11, Islamophobia was promulgated in a plethora of textual and visual narratives, including novel. This paper studies Islamop...

Uniquely Clean Elements in Rings

It is well known that every uniquely clean ring is strongly clean. In this paper, we investigate the question of when this result holds element-wise. We first construct an example showing that uniquely clean elements need not be strongly clean. However, in case every corner ring is clean the uniquely clean elements are strongly clean. Further, we classify the set of uniquely clean elements for ...
